Joshuas Own Grown Swiss Chard
Earlier this year we linked up with Otter Rotters with the aim to recycle and compost as much of our waste as possible. Otter Rotters provided us with an aeorbic composting drum to compost our kitchen waste. We also shred and compost any cardboard boxes that are not reused by customers. The compost is matured for several weeks then used on our new salad patches. Our first crop of Joshua’s grown Swiss Chard is now available in the shop and the delicious green leafy salad proves good things can come from rubbish!

Swiss Chard is a member of the beet family and is similar but slightly stronger in taste to spinach. Swiss Chard has an impressive list of health promoting nutrients. It is an excellent source of iron, vitamin C and magnesium. Both the stem and the leaves can be eaten, but if your chard has chunky stems it is best to treat them as a seperate vegetable as they will need to cook longer than the leaves.
Cook Swiss Chard as you would spinach. Be careful not to over cook it or it will go slimey and loose its flavour.
